LUMI vs XQS: the honest comparison

XQS is the newest member of the UK's top table — trade data now puts it among the four best-selling pouch brands in the country, barely two years after its May 2024 launch. Its pitch is charmingly specific: £5.50 a can, deliberately £1 cheaper than VELO and Nordic Spirit. Undercutting Big Tobacco by a pound, as a marketing strategy, from a brand owned by… Scandinavian Tobacco Group, one of the world's largest tobacco companies. The discount rebel is a subsidiary.

The Swedish heritage is real — XQS has made pouches since 2006, longer than almost anyone. But the "value alternative" framing invites one obvious question: if £5.50 is the value option, what does that make 99p?

Where XQS genuinely wins

Flavour invention and options at the edges. The beverage-inspired range — Cola Lime, Fizzy Peach, Berrynana Twist — is genuinely creative, and the nicotine-free Zero line is something almost nobody else offers in the same format. The deliberately smaller pouch is also a real preference for users who find standard slims bulky.

Where LUMI wins

The two things XQS built its pitch on: value and strength coverage. On value, £5.50 versus 99p is not a comparison so much as a rounding error — LUMI undercuts XQS's "£1 cheaper than VELO" positioning by four and a half pounds a can. On strength, XQS stops around 11–12mg; LUMI's Extra Strong (11mg) matches their ceiling almost exactly, then keeps going to 14mg and 17mg. And on pouch substance: our 0.70g slim is the fuller pouch against their deliberately smaller format — same price either way, because it's always 99p.

FAQs

Who owns XQS nicotine pouches?

XQS is owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG), a major international tobacco company, which acquired the Swedish-founded brand and launched it in the UK in May 2024. LUMI is independently owned with its own factory in Poznań.

What LUMI strength matches XQS Arctic Freeze?

XQS's strongest options sit around 11.2–12mg. LUMI Extra Strong (11mg) is the closest match — and LUMI's ladder continues to 14mg and 17mg, territory XQS doesn't cover.

Is XQS cheaper than other big brands?

Against VELO and Nordic Spirit at £6.50, yes — XQS's £5.50 RRP is deliberately positioned £1 under them. Against LUMI's flat 99p, XQS costs roughly five and a half times as much per can.
